Jul 20 , 2021Indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA 4X enclosures provide superior protection in harsh indoor or outdoor environments for electrical and electronic equipment. Meeting NEMA 4X specifications ensures protection against corrosion, splashing and hose-directed water, rain, and ice.

Which Applications Need a NEMA 4X Enclosure?
Protection against corrosion is vitally important for many work environments. Some of the most common applications of NEMA 4X enclosures include:
- Marine Environments: Salt and brackish water is a major corrosion hazard to electronic enclosures and devices. Any device that frequently encounters salt water, particularly in offshore applications such as oil and gas drilling rigs, will need at least a NEMA 4X enclosure.
- Freshwater Environments: Although fresh water doesn’t have the corrosive power that salt water does, it still presents a considerable corrosion hazard, particularly if it contains chemicals that facilitate corrosion or if the enclosure gets wet frequently.
- Chemical Environments: Corrosive chemicals are an essential component of many manufacturing processes. Devices that may come into contact with these chemicals should have a NEMA 4X enclosure to protect them (although it’s also important to ensure that the material you choose is resistant to the particular chemicals of concern, as not all materials and chemicals behave the same.)
